Arizona Cardinals Training Camp

Following last season’s success, the Arizona Cardinals are enjoying the presence of larger crowds at this year’s preseason training camp held at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. This brought back memories of my visit to the Cardinals’ camp back in 2003. Here are a few impressions of that day.

1. It was Emmit Smith’s first year in Arizona so I figured it would be cool to see him in action up close. All he did was stand around and talk to the other players.

2. I tried to get closer to the action to take some pictures by cleverly making my way through the pine trees behind one end zone. I took a couple of pictures and was promptly yelled at by the staff. “Hey! You’re not allowed to be back there!” Ooops, my bad.

3. The practice field was immaculate. I never saw such pristine grass before in my life! It was perfectly flat and not a weed in sight! George Toma would have been proud.

4. I don’t think you could find a more beautiful setting for a football practice. Besides the perfect lawn, there were pine trees everywhere and a great view of Mount Elden.

5. It was difficult to focus on any practice drills with three kids, 6 and under, in tow. It was a constant battle just keeping them off the field!

6. I bumped into Ross Shimabuku, a local sportscaster for KTVK Channel 3 in Phoenix. I don’t know him personally but I recognized him from his previous stint doing sports reporting in Hawaii. While talking to him he asked me with a puzzled look on his face, “So you like it here (in Arizona)?” I said, “Yeah, it’s been nice.” He looked even more puzzled after my response. In May of this year he packed-up and moved to San Diego.
