In 1997, when the Denver Broncos debuted their new (still current as of this post) uniforms, I had serious reservations about them. In fact I thought they were just plain ugly. They were so different from anything out there. As the season progressed, those rebellious, tradition destroying unis began to grow on me. No, not like a wart. I honestly believed they looked sharp, bold and contemporary. To this day I think they are among the best uniforms in the NFL.
In 1999, the University of Oregon’s football uniforms took a bold turn and made its eye-popping first appearance to mixed reviews. Well, actually, it wasn’t so mixed. Most people hated them, including me. As the years have gone by I can honestly say . . . that I still think they’re ugly! I have never gotten used to them. If there is a silver lining in the dark storm cloud known as the Oregon football uniform, it’s this: Oregon has developed a visual brand identity that is unmistakable and to the University of Oregon, it’s worth all the ridicule.
Update: The Ducks are at it again. New uniforms are ready for the 2009–10 season (see link below). Um . . . duck feathers? Hmm . . . ask me how I feel about this a year from now.
